There are no secrets to success — only effort. There is no easy way forward.
Here's what I've learned from decades of working with organizations around the world, helping them navigate change, embrace innovation, and accelerate their journey into the future: there are no secrets to success, only effort. There is no easy way forward - you've got to put in the work. Even so, in all that time, I've encountered countless individuals and teams desperately searching for that elusive "secret sauce" – the magic formula that will unlock their path to success.
Think about the myth of the 'magic formula.' We live in a world obsessed with shortcuts. We want the five-step program, the secret methodology, the hidden key that successful people supposedly use but don't want to share. This thinking is not just wrong – it's dangerous. It keeps us focused on seeking instead of doing, on finding instead of building, on waiting instead of acting.
The truth is far simpler and far more challenging: success comes from sustained effort, continuous learning, and the courage to take action even when the path isn't clear.
What drives success? After working with thousands of organizations and watching the patterns of those who thrive versus those who struggle, I've observed that success isn't mysterious at all. It's built on fundamentals that anyone can practice:
- Sustained effort: The future takes hard work. There's no getting around it. You can't outsource the effort required to transform your business. Consider the story of Randy Kearse, a man who reinvented his life after prison. I wrote him into my book Now What after interviewing him in my 'reinvention' video series in 2021. He didn't wait for a secret formula to sell his book. Instead, he put in the work, selling over 100,000 copies of his book on the New York subway. He called it "the same hustle as prison but with a different product!"That is a powerful example of relentless effort. Similarly, I worked with a kitchen cabinet manufacturer that put in the hard work of a massive IT upgrade to fix its inefficient manual processes. That effort allowed them to move staff into a new custom-designed business that soon accounted for 60% of their profits. Different stories, same result!
- Continuous learning and reinvention: Always remember this: your most important skill is your ability to learn a new one. The effort to continuously learn is non-negotiable. saw this firsthand with Beth Cooper, a meeting planner whose 22-year career vanished overnight during the pandemic. I also interviewed her for that series, and learned that she didn't wait for a new future. Within a week of her job change, she put in the effort to learn, enrolling in a class on virtual event management that led directly to her next career opportunity. Success isn't a destination – it's an ongoing process of adaptation.
- An optimistic and opportunity-focused mindset: I see opportunities in every trend, even during challenging economic times. The future belongs to optimists who can spot possibilities where others see only problems. Nurture an insane optimism. Negativity kills innovation and momentum faster than any external threat.
- Embracing risk and learning from failure: Mistakes aren't roadblocks – they're foundations. During the 2008 recession, Procter & Gamble ran countless micro-experiments with pricing and products. They put in the effort to "fail fast, fail cheaply," using small risks to find big opportunities. Each failure builds what I call 'experiential capital'. That's the invaluable knowledge that can't be gained any other way. Similarly, LEGO transformed from near-bankruptcy by embracing the risky idea of crowdsourcing its product design. That effort to learn from their community fueled their incredible turnaround.
Here's what I tell every leader, every entrepreneur, every individual looking to make their mark: Stop searching for secrets and start taking action. The path forward isn't hidden – it's built step-by-step through consistent effort, bold decisions, and a relentless focus on growth.
Success isn't about running faster than change – it's about running with it, growing through it, and transforming because of it. It's about doing things differently, challenging assumptions, and acting decisively.
If there's any secret at all, it's this: there are no secrets.
Success is earned through effort, sustained by learning, and accelerated by action.
It's available to anyone willing to do the work.
So stop chasing. Start building.
